Matematica Maths

In the last few days I was all worried about not finding the time to study the Montessori albums and understanding what was the next stage in math to help my son memorise all the sums and subctractions between 1 and 20. Often I find it is difficult to find the time to concentrate on one presentation, and browse the album, and often the materials are not exploited to the full. Even tonight I found out about yet another way of using the number rods for our purpose, and I omitted to read it before because time is so little. Anyway, initially I had thought about the snake game to fix quantities and all these operations, but then I have seen the addition strip board (and the subtraction strip board) and found its amazing potential.  Here is a video https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNK0IfPeMNc9A8UyXsfV_CdNbWxx6DxO9SIVl-oo88k9V5aFEam-tiZm80PNI7KK02-EUMp7wTORu5U6lyyNO4kBnZX1q4LlXo8MH-iRjum7IBLnSGjPyVX6gu5VVegX-2lEmVGby_9Q/s1600/CIMG4372.JPG it is about a math equation so it is a bit advanced compared to the first presentations of the material (there are about 15 pages of variations and extensions). What I love the most are these strips that remind me of the number rods and are so uself with the colours and the numbers to fix all the matches and the quantities. The snake game is also useful for this, but I liked this board better.Anyway I will let you know if he has liked the presentations!

Today I am very satisfied with our work. We went through three different presentations of this material. First we solved all the equations that make ten, then we worked on double numbers (producing even number results) and eventually we worked on the sum of numbers that give odd numbers. For me it was great to see right away the interest of my son and the fact he memorised instantly the sums without effort. This is right what I was looking for, avoiding painstaking oral abstract mnemonic repetitions without tangible references. My son was able to memorise without realising it with all the visual stimulation and to lay good math foundations at the same time. I recommend this material highly. If you read English, you can find information on this page http://www.infomontessori.com/mathematics/tables-of-arithmetic-addition-strip-board.htm and to buy materials, I found the best supplier for me is this www.towerhighlearning.com for prices, shipping prices in the UK and Italy, reliability. Furthermore the owner is a mum who opened this business to support homeschooling her daughters, really inspiring (and obviously to have all the materials!). I also would like to mention the snake game to fix the concepts of addition and subtraction. I am not saying that without these exercises and materials children do not learn, but as usual what happens here is that you have the materialisation of the mathematical abstraction, which offers the child a full understanding of the concept as well as that mental picture of numbers that they would not get until later in life. If you would like to know more, you can read about it here www.infomontessori.com/mathematics/tables-of-arithmetic-addition-snake-game.htm . Again, the material here is hard to produce, unless you can source the beads in the right colours, so I would advice the purchase.
